New Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art Exhibition on Comics

Beginning Tuesday, October 15th, the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art (along with the Jewish Art Salon) will be featuring a new exhibit: JOMIX – Jewish Comics: Art & Derivation. The show promises a showcase “of cutting-edge creators, reinvestigating traditional genres like superhero, political satire, romance, horror, science fiction and confessionals through a Jewish lens.”

Guest speakers are scheduled to include Joel Silverstein, Richard McBee, and Aimee Rubensteen, Exhibit Curators from the Jewish Art Salon. Introductions will be provided by Yona Verwer, President of the Jewish Art Salon, and Participating Artists include

Shay Charka, Howard Chaykin, Leela Corman, Jessica Deutsch, Aliza Donath, Dorit Jordan Dotan, Josh Edelglass, Zev Engelmayer, Liana Finck, Stuart Immonen, Miriam Katin, Scott Koblish, Michael Korosty, Yonah Lavery, Miriam Libicki, Sarah Lightman, Rutu Modan, Archie Rand, Ariel Schrag, Liat Shalom, Dov Smiley, Joshua Stulman, Arthur Szyk, Deborah Ugoretz, Eli Valley, Julian Voloj, JT Waldman, David Wander, Al Wiesner, Jack Kirby, Joel Silverstein, and Ephraim Wuensch.

A catalogue for the exhibit will be available in September.

Jewish Women’s Confessional Comics Wins Eisner Award

Last Friday at the San Diego Comic Con International, the winners of the 2015 Eisner Awards were announced. We at Sacred & Sequential would like to offer our congratulations to editor Sarah Lightman who took home the Eisner Award for “Best Scholarly/Academic Work” with her book Graphic Details: Jewish Women’s Confessional Comics in Essays and Interviews, published by McFarland. It’s a treat to see academics at the intersection of comics and religion take home such a prestigious industry award for their scholarship. We look forward to following such achievements as scholars delve ever further into the worlds of Jewish culture, of autobiographical comics, and of the women who make them.

Graphic Details is a groundbreaking touring exhibition, providing the first in-depth look at a unique and prolific niche of graphic storytelling – Jewish women’s autobiographical comics. While the influential role of Jews in cartooning has long been acknowledged, the role of Jewish women in shaping the medium is largely unexplored. This exhibition of original drawings, full comic books and graphic novels, presents the powerful work of eighteen Canadian and international artists whose intimate, confessional work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades, creating an entirely new genre.
